Everyone has one friend who reviews bakeries the way other people review restaurants. They know which café does the flakiest croissant, they have opinions about crusts, and their sourdough starter has a name. Buying gifts for bread lovers is tricky, because you cannot out-bake a baker.

So don't try. This guide is half bread wisdom (keeping loaves fresh, reviving a sad baguette, building a bakery hamper) and half gifts that are shaped like bread but will never go mouldy. First, which bread person are they?

The Sourdough Scientist: feeds a starter, owns a lame, says "crumb structure" out loud. Buy them something fun, never another baking tool.
The Toast Romantic: thinks toast is a complete meal at any hour. Soft, cosy and smiley is the brief.
The Croissant Morning Person: lives for a café breakfast and pastry flakes on the jumper. Something pretty and wearable.

Bread care: three tips worth more than any gift

Skip the fridge. Bread goes stale faster in the fridge than on the bench. Keep it in a bread bag or bin, cut side down on the board.
Freeze it sliced. Slice a fresh loaf, freeze it in a bag, and toast slices straight from frozen. No more half a loaf going green on day four.
Revive a stale baguette. Run it quickly under the tap, then bake at about 180°C for 5 to 8 minutes. The crust crisps up and the inside softens again. Eat it straight away, because the magic only lasts an hour.

For the Sourdough Scientist: desk and study bakes

Wrap it in a clean tea towel instead of paper. The tea towel is part of the gift, and it keeps the crust happy.
Add a spread: a jar of jam, good butter or a honey from the farmers' market.
Add one keepsake from this list, so something is left when the crumbs are gone.
