Food Bag Charms: How to Style Your Bag Like a Tiny Snack Stall
Somewhere along the way, keyrings grew up and became charms. Handbags, backpacks, tote bags and even laptop sleeves now come with a little dangling friend or three. We are delighted, because we have been clipping food to our bags since the Burrito Pencil Case days.
This is a styling guide first: how to pick a charm, where to clip it, and how to build a cluster that looks deliberate rather than like a lost property box. Then ten food charms from our keychains collection, sorted by the look they suit.
Why a food charm?
Because a plain bag says nothing, and a smiling dumpling says a lot. Food charms are cheerful, instantly recognisable and a conversation starter in the coffee queue. They also solve a real problem: a fluffy bun is far easier to find at the bottom of a bag than a bare key.
How to style a bag charm (five quick rules)
- Pick one hero. Choose the biggest or brightest charm as the star, then add one or two smaller ones. Three is a cluster. Seven is a fruit shop.
- Mix textures. Pair something fluffy (a pom-pom or plush) with something different (crochet, felt or resin). Same-texture clusters tend to blur together.
- Vary the lengths. A long charm next to a short one looks styled. Three charms the same length look like they are queuing.
- Play with colour. On a black, white or tan bag, one bright charm does all the work. On a colourful bag, go tonal: a pink cherry on a pink tote looks very put together.
- Leave the zip alone. Clip charms to a handle ring, D-ring or strap rather than the main zip pull, so the bag still opens easily and nothing swings into your lunch.
Where to clip it
- Handbags: the ring where the handle meets the bag. Charms around 10 to 15 cm long sit nicely here.
- Backpacks: the top grab loop or a shoulder strap ring. Bigger plush charms suit backpacks best.
- Tote bags: loop the charm around one handle with a lobster clasp. Lightweight crochet and pom-poms are ideal.
- Keys and pencil cases: any of these work as a keyring too. A charm on a pencil case zip is the fastest way to find it in a school bag.
Charm care
Spot clean plush and pom-poms with a damp cloth and let them air dry. Brush a pom-pom gently with your fingers to fluff it back up. Keep charms out of hot cars and away from sharp keys, and check the clip every so often, because a charm that falls off on the train is a very sad charm.
Soft and sweet: the easy everyday look
Cherry on Top Pom-Pom Bag Charm ($21.95 AUD)
Two fluffy pom-pom cherries (about 5 to 6 cm each) on a stitched leaf, about 15 cm long from ring to cherry, with a gold-tone spring clip. Five colours: Cherry Red, Wine Red, Hot Pink, Baby Pink and Cream. The easiest first charm there is.
Farmers' Market Crochet Keychains (Set of 3) (from $41.95 AUD)
Three hand-crocheted keychains in one bundle: the Fruit Bowl set (strawberry, cherries, peaches) or the Garden Patch set (carrot, avocado, pear). Each is about 14 cm long with a key ring and a lobster clasp. Wear all three as a cluster, or split them into three tiny gifts.
Bakery statement pieces
For anyone who would carry a whole bakery if they could. These are chunky enough to be the hero of a cluster.
Bakery Rope Bag Charm (from $24.95 AUD)
A chunky braided cord loaded with tiny felt bakes, checked beads and a little bell. Pick Baguette, Hot Dog, Knot Bun or Choc Baguette. This one is a whole look on its own, so give it a strap to itself.
Resin Food Charms, Set of 10 ($36.95 AUD)
A tiny bakery for your keyring: ten little resin bakes with silver loops, from a waffle to an egg tart. Pick Mixed Style or ten of one favourite. Hang one on your keys and keep the rest for swapping.
The yum cha trolley
Our dumpling and bubble tea fans have been asking for these. If that is you, our takeaway menu gift guide has more.
Dumpling Plush Keychain ($22.95 AUD)
A soft plush dumpling about 12 cm wide, with perfect little pleats and the calmest face in the snack aisle. Wide and flat, so it sits nicely against a backpack.
Dim Sum Buddies Plush Keychain (from $21.95 AUD)
Five flavours from the yum cha trolley: Char Siu Bao, Shumai, Beef Ball Bowl, Ginger or Chilli, about 8 to 10 cm each. Ginger and Chilli come on a chain. Two of these together look like a very small banquet.
Bubble Tea Cup Plush Keychain ($22.95 AUD)
A fluffy cup about 12 cm tall with a cloud top, a little straw and embroidered boba pearls. Matcha, Strawberry, Blueberry or Brown Sugar. Not for children under 3 (small parts).
Colour pops for plain bags
Roasted Sweet Potato Plush Charm ($21.95 AUD)
A fuzzy roasted sweet potato, split open and grinning, about 6 to 10 cm, on a metal ring and clasp. Brown and gold, so it suits darker bags beautifully.
Mushroom Plush Keychain (10 cm) ($23.95 AUD)
A 10 cm smiley mushroom in eight colours (Orange, Pink, Purple, Brown, Blue, Mint, Yellow or Red). The friendliest way to add one colour pop to a plain bag.
Fruity Fun Watermelon Plush Keychain for Bags ($21.95 AUD)
A grinning watermelon slice about 12 cm tall on a metal keyring and chain. A little bit cheeky, very summery, and impossible to lose.
Three clusters to copy
- The picnic: Cherry pom-pom (hero) plus one crochet strawberry from the Fruit Bowl set. Pinks and reds, two textures, two lengths.
- The yum cha: Dumpling (hero) plus a Shumai buddy plus a Matcha bubble tea. All soft, so vary the lengths with a short chain.
- The morning bakery: Bakery Rope Charm (hero) on its own strap, a Resin Food Charm on your keys. Let the rope do the talking.
As a gift
Charms make very good small presents: no sizing, easy to wrap and personal without being serious. A Farmers' Market set splits into three gifts, and lots of these suit a stocking. Shipping
Shipping is free on orders over $50 AUD. We pack within 1 to 3 business days and most items arrive in 10 to 18 business days. For Christmas, order by Friday 20 November.
FAQ
What is a bag charm?
A decorative keyring made to hang on the outside of a bag, usually from the handle or a strap ring. Most of ours work as keyrings too.
How many bag charms should I wear?
One is classic, two or three is a cluster. Pick a hero charm and build around it with smaller ones in different lengths and textures.
Will a bag charm damage my bag?
Clip it to a metal ring or strap rather than the leather itself, and choose lighter charms for delicate bags. Soft plush and crochet are the gentlest.
Where can I buy food bag charms in Australia?
Right here: everything in our keychains collection ships free on orders over $50 AUD, in Australia and worldwide.
Happy clipping,
